Clearly we do not know exactly what is going on and those "studies" that try to figure it out are done in the laboratory and tries to look at just one influence.
The real key to athletic improvement is "repeated stress" over prolonged periods. Without that we are all a bunch of couch potatoes who occasionally run to catch the bus.
